Actor Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood with Abir Gulaal is facing resistance from political groups in Maharashtra. The film’s teaser, released earlier this week, was met with excitement from fans. However, it quickly became a target for Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena leaders.
MNS Opposes the Release
Ameya Khopkar, an MNS leader, has made it clear that the party will not allow Abir Gulaal to release in Maharashtra. He stated, “We won’t let the film release here because it stars a Pakistani actor. We are gathering more information about the film and will make a detailed statement soon.”
Shiv Sena Weighs In
Sanjay Nirupam, a leader of Shiv Sena, also criticized the film’s release. He claimed that Indian audiences don’t support films with Pakistani artists. “Pakistani stars haven’t been successful in India. I advise Pakistanis to focus on their own country’s film industry,” he said.
Background on the Ban
In 2016, India imposed a ban on Pakistani artists in response to political tensions. This ban prevented stars like Fawad Khan from working in Bollywood. However, in 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition to continue the ban.
Challenges Ahead for Fawad Khan
Fawad Khan’s comeback film faces political and social hurdles in Maharashtra. Whether the film will release or be blocked remains to be seen.
