At a recent event held at the Governor House in Karachi, Pakistani actress Yashma Gill shared her transformative journey back to Islam and posed a thought-provoking question to renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Zakir Naik. The event, which was organized to welcome Dr. Naik and his son by Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori, began with the national anthem and a recitation from the Quran. The highlight of the event was Dr. Naik’s lecture on “What is the Purpose of Our Lives?” followed by an engaging question-and-answer session.

Yashma Gill, who was the first to raise a question, opened up about her personal experience of rediscovering faith. She revealed how Dr. Zakir Naik’s videos had a significant impact on her, helping her reconnect with Islam after a period of atheism. In a heartfelt moment, she thanked Dr. Naik for his influence on her journey. In response, Dr. Naik commended her courage and reminded everyone that guidance, or Hidayat, comes from Allah, who bestows it upon whom He wills.

Gill’s question to Dr. Naik centered around the complex theological concept of predestination and free will. She asked, “If Allah has already written a person’s destiny, what free will do we have? Who is responsible for our choices between right and wrong when we believe that our fate is already determined?”

Dr. Naik acknowledged that this question is one that many Muslims struggle with but may hesitate to ask due to fear of religious repercussions. He explained that while Allah possesses knowledge of the unseen and is aware of the actions every individual will take, humans still possess free will in choosing their paths.

“It is not that humans act according to what Allah has decreed,” Dr. Naik clarified, “but rather that Allah writes what humans will choose to do based on their free will.” He emphasized that Allah’s omniscience includes knowing the choices people will make at different points in their lives, but it is ultimately the individual who exercises their free will in making those choices.

To illustrate his point, Dr. Naik used an analogy of a person standing at a crossroads with multiple paths to choose from. While Allah knows which path the individual will take, it is the person who makes the decision based on their own thoughts and reasoning.

Yashma Gill’s honest reflection and Dr. Zakir Naik’s insightful response resonated deeply with the attendees, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between faith and the human experience. The event provided an opportunity for many to reflect on their spiritual journeys and to seek answers to profound questions of belief, destiny, and personal responsibility.
