The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked social media app TikTok in the country after reportedly the Chinese company failed to keep a check on the “development of an effective mechanism for proactive moderation of unlawful online content”.

According to the PTA, the content on TikTok was reviewed after they received several complaints from different segments of society who believe such immoral, obscene and vulgar content on social media is creating extremely negative effects on society in general and youth in particular.

“TikTok was given “considerable time” to respond and comply with instructions to effectively moderate “unlawful online content”, said PTA in a statement.

Earlier, PTA had issued a final warning to TikTok and assured to conduct dialogues with the company to control the immoral and vulgar content.
