Pakistan batter Umar Akmal has made serious allegations against former head coach Waqar Younis, accusing him of mentally pressuring him during his time with the national team. Akmal revealed these claims in a recent interview, describing how Younis discouraged his aggressive approach in Test cricket.

According to Akmal, Younis criticized his attacking shots in Test matches, often saying:

“Have you started playing T20 cricket in Tests?” He also recalled how Younis questioned his efforts to rotate the strike, remarking, “Are you playing an ODI in Test cricket?”

Frustrated by the situation, Akmal pointed out how Test cricket has evolved. “Now, look at today’s Test cricket—it doesn’t even last three or four days,” he said.

Akmal also accused Younis of showing a lack of respect for his family. He alleged that Younis openly questioned why three brothers—Kamran Akmal, Adnan Akmal, and himself—were all part of the national team.

Akmal recalled:

“I heard it with my own ears. Waqar Younis said, ‘Will all the cricket be played by these brothers?’”

Further allegations included Younis focusing on personal details rather than cricketing performance.

Akmal said:

“He would ask me, ‘Why are you wearing these glasses? Why these shoes?’ Instead of focusing on my cricket, he was more interested in such things.”

Despite the challenges, Akmal expressed gratitude towards senior players who supported him. They encouraged him to ignore the negativity and play his natural game, emphasizing his strengths over external criticism.

Umar Akmal, who last played for Pakistan in October 2019, continues to reflect on his time with the national team.
