This Sunday, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) held the premier of the film What’s Love Got To Do With It and the whole cast graced the event and red carpet, including our very own Sajal Aly. The actress was accompanied by other cast members, including Lily James and Shabana Azmi, as well as the producer and writer of the film, Jemima Khan.
Donning an all-black fusion outfit, Sajal candidly talked to the press there about how terrific of a time she had shooting the film, and how it was nothing short of a dream come true. She also talked about her experience with costar Emma Thompson, with whom she shared a dance number in the film.
“I had to kind of dance with [Emma]! And I asked the director, ‘How crazy do you want me to go?’ And he said, ‘As wild as you can!’ and it was with Emma! We were just dancing on this desi number and it was a dream come true because she is a legend. Honestly I feel that I am lucky, I am privileged and I am blessed!” she shared excitedly.

It wasn’t just Sajal who was beyond excited for the film. Jemima Khan also talked about her inspiration behind the story, and what compelled her to bring it onscreen. “The film is my take on having seen some very successful arranged marriages and having had some pre-conceived ideas about what they might be like,” she said.

“Seeing them up-close, seeing them happy, including even the younger generation that is slightly more intellectual, assist these marriages that are a very consensual arrangement. And this is also me looking at, kind of, different approaches of how to define lasting love as someone who’s been, quite useless at it, personally,” she added.
What’s Love Got To Do With It is a quirky rom-com that follows a filmmaker, played by Lily James, who decides to document her best friend’s journey, played by Shazad Latif, towards an arranged marriage to a Pakistani girl, played by Sajal. The film oscillates between London and Lahore, and offers a beautiful amalgamation of love and friendship.
