Cricketer-turned-commentator Urooj Mumtaz said women around the world have found their place quite well in the commentary field.

Speaking to behtareen.pk, Urooj said cricket sense has helped her a lot to try his luck in the commentary. “Commentary is all about explaining the game and you need cricket sense for it. I think my cricket sense has helped me a lot in commentary,” she said.

Urooj shared her inspiration among commentators. “I loved watching Isa Guha and Melani Jones and the way they accelerated in this male-dominated field. A lot of women came up after them and pursued commentary as a profession and I am one of them,” she shared.

On the other hand, Urooj said she finds it difficult to explain cricket in Urdu and taking classes from Pakistan’s renowned Urdu commentator, Tariq Saeed.

“We all have always listened to cricket commentary in English so we are used to it. It is just like when you study a subject in English so you are comfortable in giving its exam in English,” she said.

“I still find it difficult to do commentary in Urdu and I know people talked a lot about my Urdu commentary last year. I am not doing Urdu commentary this year but I take out my time to learn it from one of the renowned Urdu commentators we have around us, Tariq Bhai. I try to learn the pronunciation of Urdu words,” she highlighted.

It must be noted here that Urooj is currently the chief selector of the Pakistan women’s team, a member of PCB’s cricket committee, and serving as an English commentator in PSL 6.
