The year 2022 has been truly significant for the local cinema, considering how it marked the return of movies on the big screen after a couple of exhausting pandemic years. So many films that were ready to release were put on hold because of the unprecedented conditions that came because of Covid, and how most of the audience was homebound. With the world adjusting to the new normal, our entertainment industry provided back-to-back movie releases which had something for everyone. Let’s take a look at all the films that made it to the big screen this year, and refresh our memories.

Ghabrana Nahi Hai

With the former Prime Minister’s favourite catchphrase as its title, Ghabrana Nahi Hai was an action-packed crime thriller, starring Saba Qamar, Zahid Ahmed, Syed Jibran, and Nayyer Ijaz amongst others. The film featured some run-of-the-mill tropes like a love triangle, a cop hero, and endless corruption in the country, but what set it apart was how the female lead, played by Qamar, wasn’t another damsel in distress. The film currently remains the highest-grossing movie of the year, and its blend of humour and gravity was enjoyed by the audience and critics alike.

Dum Mastam

After giving us Superstar in 2019, director Mohammed Ehteshamuddin brought Dum Mastam to our screens. Starring Imran Ashraf and Amar Khan as childhood sweethearts, the film served as Adnan Siddiqui’s production debut and had all the elements of a classic Eid entertainer – from plenty of romance and heartbreak to a rollercoaster ride of emotions and drama. The film also included a bunch of cameos from familiar faces in the industry, like Siddiqui himself, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Mooroo, and Kiran Malik to name a few.

Parde Mein Rehne Do

From the production house of Wajahat Rauf, Parde Mein Rehne Do was another social romantic comedy that hit our screens this year. Starring Hania Aamir and Ali Rehman Khan as a married couple, the film explored all the pressing issues faced by newlywed couples in this society, mainly revolving around couples who are unable to conceive. Despite focusing on an important topic, the film remained entertaining throughout with its dance numbers, comic relief, and strong performances.

Chakkar

Stepping away from your average rom-coms, Chakkar brought a murder-mystery to the mix with Ahsan Khan and Neelam Muneer as the main leads. Muneer’s double role in the film made it a noticeable performance, and also ranked it on number 5 in the list of highest-grossing films.

Kamli

Another Saba Qamar starrer, this time with completely different undertones, Kamli was Sarmad Khoosat’s attempt at bringing something offbeat yet poignant to the table. Described as a “a tale of love, loss, and cloaked secrets,” the film stood out because of stellar performances from its female lineup – mainly Qamar, Nimra Bucha, and Sania Saeed, a captivating soundtrack, Khoosat’s unique way of storytelling, and a plot twist everyone’s still talking about.

Ishrat Made in China

Another film released this year was Ishrat Made in China, starring Mohib Mirza and Sanam Saeed. While the film’s plot consisted of all the elements that make a memorable entertainer, it failed to make an impact as big as other movies of the year so far.

Rehbra

Ayesha Omar and Ahsan Khan are currently gracing our big screens with their romance-filled flick, Rehbra. While the plot may seem like another rom-com, most of the cinemagoers are enjoying the couple’s onscreen Chemistry and Omar’s performance as a character that has more depth than Bulbulay’s Khoobsoorat.

The lineup of 2022 films is currently going strong, with more highly-anticipated films releasing this Eid-ul-Azha. This includes Nabeel Qureshi’s Quaid e Azam Zindabad, starring Fahad Mustafa and Mahira Khan, and Nadeem Baig’s London Nahi Jaunga starring Humayun Saeed and Mehwish Hayat. A special mention for Yasir Hussain starrer Javed Iqbal, which got banned before its release locally, but received critical acclaim internationally.

Which movie ranked the highest in your personal list? Are you excited to watch the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha releases? Feel free to share your thoughts.
